Education and Skills Development

Equipping children and youth with knowledge and skills for a brighter future

About the Program

Education is the foundation for opportunity and empowerment. IDYDC’s Education & Skills Development program works to ensure that children and youth acquire the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to succeed in school, life, and the workforce. By combining formal education support with vocational and digital skills training, we help young people unlock their potential and prepare for a brighter future.

Our work includes:

Improving learning outcomes: Supporting literacy and numeracy programs in schools, strengthening parent-teacher partnerships, and providing life skills education to children and youth.

Vocational and technical skills training: Equipping youth with practical skills for income-generating activities and employability in their communities.

Digital skills development: Establishing initiatives like the Digital Hub to train youth in digital literacy, online entrepreneurship, and technology-based skills.

Project partnerships: Implementation of donor-supported projects, such as USAID Jifunze Uelewe, which focuses on improving literacy and numeracy in primary schools.

Inclusive education support: Targeting vulnerable and out-of-school children, including those from the Upendo Rehabilitation Center, to ensure no child is left behind.

Through this program, IDYDC ensures that education is not just about access, but about equipping children and youth with relevant skills and opportunities to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

USAID Jifunze Uelewe

Jifunze Uelewe is a 4.5-year United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/Tanzania activity. The aim of the Activity is to sustainably improve literacy and numeracy skills for all pre-primary through Standard 4 pupils in the targeted regions of Iringa, Morogoro, Mtwara, Ruvuma, and Zanzibar. The objective behind the Activity is to ensure safe and inclusive (or welcoming and supportive) learning environments for all children by 2025. The Activity will also build the capacity of teachers, Head Teachers (HTs), and administrators, as well as community-based stakeholders who have an interest in or those play a role in supporting government pre-primary and primary schools in regions previously named. Jifunze Uelewe builds on the successes of the USAID’s Tusome Pamoja Program and USAID’s Hesabu na Elimu Jumuishi Activity by continuing to support early grade education implemented in the same regions. Jifunze Uelewe activities will be structured under the following three main outcomes: • Outcome 1: Improved literacy, numeracy, and social–emotional instruction by teachers • Outcome 2: Strengthened capacity of local and regional governments to sustain improved learning outcomes • Outcome 3: Increased community support for safe and inclusive learning environments (in and outside of the school). IDYDC was sub-grantee in implementing Outcome 3 in Iringa region and four councils in Morogoro
