From Vulnerability to Hope: A Child’s Journey to Safety and Family Healing

June 26, 2019 · Administrator Web

A Childhood Marked by Uncertainty

Judith Bernard (name changed to protect identity) is an 11-year-old girl from Kalenga Ward in Iringa Region. From an early age, her home environment was marked by fear and instability, leaving her without the sense of safety every child deserves. Ongoing family conflict and violence created emotional distress, while economic hardship further strained the household.

Judith’s mother, relying on informal income-generating activities, struggled to meet the family’s needs while trying to protect her children under extremely difficult circumstances. Over time, the lack of safety and support led Judith to leave home and spend time on the streets, exposing her to even greater risks.

When Support Reached Her

Judith’s situation was identified through community networks and brought to the attention of the Iringa Development of Youth, Disabled, and Children Care (IDYDC). Guided by strong child safeguarding principles, IDYDC acted quickly to ensure Judith’s immediate protection.

A trained field officer and social work team provided her with temporary shelter, psychosocial support, and care in a safe environment. For the first time in a long while, Judith experienced stability, reassurance, and the comfort of being listened to and cared for.

Healing Within the Family

While prioritizing Judith’s safety, IDYDC also worked closely with her family to address the underlying challenges at home. Social workers engaged Judith’s mother with counseling and emotional support, helping her navigate the stress and trauma she had endured.

At the same time, structured family sessions focused on positive parenting, gender equality, and non-violent conflict resolution were introduced. Through these conversations and continued follow-up, the family was supported to understand the impact of violence on children and the importance of creating a safe and nurturing home.

A New Path for a Mother

Recognizing that economic hardship was a key source of family stress, IDYDC supported Judith’s mother to access IDYDC microcredit services. This opportunity enabled her to move away from unsafe and unstable income activities and establish a more sustainable small business.

With improved financial stability, Judith’s mother gained confidence and independence, strengthening her ability to provide for her children and contribute to a calmer and more secure home environment.

Growing in Safety and Hope

Today, Judith has been safely reunited with her family under improved and closely monitored conditions. The home environment has changed significantly, with healthier communication, shared responsibility, and a renewed commitment to non-violence.

Judith is back in school, actively learning and progressing well in her studies. Surrounded by care and stability, she is now able to focus on her childhood and her future. Beyond the family, IDYDC’s ongoing community awareness efforts in Kalenga Ward continue to strengthen understanding of child protection, prevention of gender-based violence, and the importance of sustainable livelihoods.

Judith’s journey is a powerful reminder that when children are protected and families are supported with compassion and practical solutions, lasting change is possible.
