Restoring Dignity: IDYDC Joins Forces to End Obstetric Fistula in Iringa

MACORESI

Today, the halls of the Sunset Hotel in Iringa Town were filled with a shared sense of purpose. Government officials, medical experts, international partners, and community advocates gathered for the official launch of the MACORESI Project: Informed, Responsible, Safe Maternity as a Deterrent for Obstetric Fistula (AID 013182/01/0).

For IDYDC (Iringa Development of Youth Disabled and Children Care), today wasn’t just about a ceremony, it was a call to action.

The Challenge: Beyond the Hospital Walls

Obstetric Fistula is more than a medical condition; it is a social tragedy. In areas like Iringa, Kilolo, and Mufindi, many women suffer in silence, isolated by a lack of information and the heavy weight of stigma.

While clinical excellence is vital, a hole in the body cannot be healed if the woman cannot reach the hospital, or if her community believes her condition is a “curse.”

Our Role: The Bridge to Recovery

As a core partner in the MACORESI Project (funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation – AICS), IDYDC is taking the lead on Expected Result N.2: Community Awareness and Socio-cultural Barrier Reduction.

Our mission is clear:

  • Education: Deploying Community Health Workers (CHWs) to every corner of our three target districts to explain that VVF is preventable and treatable.
  • Male Engagement: Turning men into allies who support their partners’ maternal health journeys.
  • Socioeconomic Support: Ensuring that once a woman is healed physically, she is empowered economically to reintegrate into her community with pride.

A Unified Front

The launch event featured powerful remarks from the Ministry of Health, the Regional Commissioner’s office, and our esteemed partners from the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”, Doctors with Africa CUAMM, TRRH, AOFST, and MUHAS.

This “multi-level” approach ensures that while the surgeons at Tosamaganga Regional Referral Hospital (TRRH) provide world-class care, IDYDC ensures the community is ready to receive that care and support the survivors.

The Road Ahead

As we wrap up today’s event at Sunset Hotel, the real work begins. Over the coming months, IDYDC will be on the ground, conducting awareness sessions and providing referrals to specialized services.

We believe that informed, responsible, and safe maternity is not just a project goal, it is a right for every woman in Iringa.

“We are proud and ready to play our part. When we empower a woman to seek safe maternity, we aren’t just saving one life; we are strengthening an entire generation.”IDYDC Director
